My first ebook is out!
I spent a good part of the 2020 COVID-19 quarantine working on this digital book project with my friend Dr. Ron Knaus. It was Ron’s idea to write a book about the immune system and how lifestyle factors affect immunity. During the time we spent putting the project together, and then the time I spent writing it, the whole world was focused on finding a cure for the coronavirus. But, as we say in the book, it’s not enough to understand the pathogen, we have to look at the health of the hosts (us!) The pandemic gave us all a heartbreaking illustration of this principle as those with compromised immune systems succumbed to the virus while healthy people often felt little more than cold-like symptoms.
In this digital book, we help readers understand their immune system– how it evolved over millions of years to allow homo sapiens to survive when many other human species did not. Then we teach you how to strengthen your immune system through daily lifestyle practices in the areas of diet, exercise, sleep, stress management, and maintaining a positive attitude.
Finally, we invite you to try, just for a week, a plant-based diet, with recipes and tips for breakfast, lunch, and dinner meals, and ideas for snacks and eating out.
This is an important project because zoonotic viruses, like coronaviruses, exist in many places in the world, and it is our lifestyle habits that are bringing us in closer contact with the animals that carry these viruses. Scientists have been predicting pandemics like COVID-19 for decades, and we will see future, and possibly worse, outbreaks unless we, as a world population, can make lifestyle changes that reduce our contact with disease-carrying animals.
